Website or webshop: what does your business need?

Not every business needs a shop, and not every shop needs to be big. A few questions help you decide.

What a website does

A website presents your business: what you offer, why you, and how to reach you. Its job is to turn a visit into a call, an email, a booking or a visit to your shop. For most service businesses, that is exactly what is needed.

What a webshop adds

A webshop sells directly: products, prices, stock, payment and delivery, around the clock. It also brings new work: product photos and texts, orders, returns, payment providers and terms and conditions.

Four questions that decide it

  • Do customers buy a product they can choose without talking to you?
  • Are prices fixed, or does every job get its own offer?
  • Who will handle orders, packing and returns every day?
  • Do you already sell somewhere else, for example in a shop or on a marketplace?

If the answers point to selling online, a webshop can pay off. If people need advice, a quote or a visit first, a strong website with a clear path to contact you is usually the better choice.

What it means for the budget

A webshop is usually a bigger project than a website of the same size: every product needs data, photos and text, and payment, shipping and legal pages have to be set up and tested. Running costs are higher too, from payment fees to the time spent on orders.

Three examples

  • A physiotherapy practice: a website with services, team and online booking. A shop would add nothing.
  • A maker of custom bags: a website that shows the range and leads to a quote, because every order is different.
  • A wine estate: a website with a small shop for its wines, gift boxes and vouchers.

The middle way

You can also start small: a website with a few products to order, vouchers or online booking, and a full shop later. A good website is built so that it can grow.
